Practice makes perfect. Routine creates wealth. Structure determines behaviour. Pattern recognition is key to artificial intelligence. All these are familiar ideas to you. And we love things which we are familiar with. Because there is certain level of predictability in managing it. We know what efforts required for specific outcomes. If we don’t know it, it creates considerable amount of panic and anxiety. When outcomes are not predictable and efforts required are not clearly understood, it is a matter of worry for managers. But leaders’ job is ‘exception handling’. Dealing with occurrences which are not normal. Situations which are new. Problems which never existed before. Never happened before. All new events. No pre-defined processes of problem solving. It needs to be encountered with new ideas, creativity and different level of experimental mindset.
When things change at the speed of light, leadership is all about ‘exception handling’. No artificial intelligence can replace such jobs.
