What is Micromasters?
“MicroMasters programs are a series of graduate level courses from top universities designed to advance your career. They provide deep learning in a specific career field and are recognised by employers for their real job relevance. Students may apply to the university offering credit for the MicroMasters certificate and, if accepted, can pursue an accelerated and less expensive Master’s Degree.” – Edx
The courses are created by several new university partners, including Boston University, the University of British Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania.
In a few years, traditional college education would get affected by such online programs which are flexible, affordable, sharp and relevant. These programs are designed by experts and has finest production values. The flow of the program is suitable for an internet based learning model. Mostly 5-12 minute sessions (that is the sweet spot!) followed by quizzes, discussions and additional readings.
It is offering a level playing field in education. While I do a lot of online courses, I see students from India, Africa, Eastern Europe, South East Asia celebrating such courses available at unbelievable prices (one tenth cost of a traditional university program). This has never happened. Many big service providers in education ignoring this revolution as it can affect their profits. They put pressure on employers and create a signalling effect to traditional courses as top credentials for any important work. But smart employers are realising the fact and pushing their employees to do online learning programs.
